CGC Projects in Focus - Parramatta Square

As part of our blog series, CGC Projects in Focus, we're looking at major projects which are set to transform New South Wales and Queensland. In this blog, we will be considering the national and state significance of, Parramatta Square, a $2 billion development set to improve the Western Sydney CBD. Parramatta Square urban renewal project

Parramatta Square is one of the biggest and boldest urban renewal projects in Australia. It will inject new life into Parramatta’s centre by providing 290,000 sqm of contemporary commercial and retail space. Construction work on Parramatta Square began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2020.

The background

The project will occupy a three-hectare site in Western Sydney, which is attracting huge investment in its rapidly growing economy as one of NSW’s fastest-growing regions. The project will deliver four towers positioned on top of transport services, retail and public spaces and will include the biggest commercial office structure Australia has ever seen. The total development is expected to accommodate up to 23,500 employees.

Parramatta has the highest occupancy rate of any office market in Australia and a number of big-name government and commercial tenants are already slated to move into the new office space at Parramatta Square.

The size and scale of the Parramatta Square project is well supported by heavy investment from the NSW government in other infrastructure projects in the area, including new transport links, the Parramatta light rail, the Western Sydney Stadium and the Western Sydney Airport.

The project

When finished, Parramatta Square will be home to four towers developed by the Walker Corporation, specifically chosen because of their track record in creating well-integrated developments in big urban precincts. The towers will all feature environmentally-sustainable design elements and will join some already completed projects, including: the multi-level Western Sydney University campus, and Multiplex’s new Sydney Water Corporate Headquarters.

Two other key projects still in progress at Parramatta Square include:

  1. A civic and community building designed by French firm Manuelle Gautrand Architecture together with Australian firms Design Inc and Lacoste and Stevenson.
  2. A futuristic, 250-metre long public area designed by JMD Design, Taylor Cullity Lethlean, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, and Gehl Architects.

The opportunity

The design and execution of Parramatta Square will require the cooperation of many industry professionals. Creating around 400 construction, architecture, design, engineering and project management roles.  And will support an addition 4000 ongoing and associated jobs in Western Sydney.
