November 2016: Residential – Can the Boom Continue?

Welcome to the November edition of the CGC Newsletter.

In this edition, we will give an update on the Construction and Civil markets and Azri Azlan will cover off the CGC social round up leading us into the silly season.

Our first news is that Matt Weighill has been promoted to Principal Consultant. Matt relocated from the UK in 2015 and had to learn a new desk and settle in to a new city. Now he is one of the top billers in the business and has been influential in improving temp processes and procedures, adding to our excellent reputation within our Building Division and also contributing to CGC being a pleasant place to work. Congratulations Matt!

Residential – Can the Boom Continue?

I keep asking myself whether the rate of multi-unit apartments projects can maintain the rate of construction we’ve seen over the last few years? In short – the answer is yes. With a strong pipeline of work in the residential sector, 2016/17 will be another good year. This means the skills shortage we are seeing across Foreman, Site Managers, Contract Admin and Project Engineers will continue in to next year if not beyond!

The commercial construction (office blocks) is set to continue with a number of large commercial projects kicking off next year, a number of these being funded by overseas investors and developers.

Ironically though, the industry may see some changes in the coming years due to the crackdown on overseas investment by the banks. Maybe this will help slow the uncontrollable cost of apartments in Sydney, possibly making it more affordable for first time buyers, or at least we can only hope so.

Infrastructure investment is still huge by the public sector – Go Baird! and we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg – https://www.nsw.gov.au/rebuilding – naturally this investment will drive people to NSW, growing population, increasing appetite for overseas investment in turn increasing NSW GDP.

To wrap things up the future is looking bright.

CGC recently undertook a key milestone in its history, by opening the doors to our new offices in Brisbane CBD area – Level 1 Suite 1, 410 Queen Street, Brisbane, QLD, 4000. Our new office is situated in the prestigious ‘golden triangle’ of Brisbane, which has easy access via train, bus, and just a stone throw from the local Pig ‘n’ Whistle on Eagle street.

The Queensland Construction sector has experienced a busy period of sustained and continued growth. From Brisbane we offer opportunities to work with some of Australia’s most well respected and sought after employers. CGC Brisbane will be looking forward to continuing this trend well into 2017, with all new and exciting projects planned for the new year across all disciplines.

CGC Social

There’s never a dull moment at CGC and this month has been particularly eventful. In customary CGC fashion, the crew went all out for Melbourne Cup Day. Almost everyone came to the office in Spring racing fashion and after a super productive morning of work, we headed out to the Light Brigade Hotel for the celebrations. The big winners of the day were Dan Kundi and Jamie Ryde who managed to claw back some early losses whilst George took out the sweepstake with Almandin.

In other news, the top athletes of CGC (featuring Jeffrey Grantham) took part in the JP Morgan run which took place on Wednesday 9th November. It was a tight race with James Loomes coming in first among the CGC crew with a time of 22.36, Trevor Brown following close behind at 25.01 and George Hvid at 26.08. Well done boys. As I’m writing this, George is reminding me that the race was 5.6km, not 5km. Nice one George.

Finally, Jamie married his fiancé, Lisa, in a lovely ceremony at Palm Beach.
