Everyone at CGC would like to wish all the avid readers of our newsletter a Happy New Year.
As reported throughout our newsletters in 2014 (the historic newsletters are all listed on the website), the market was mixed in the Australian Engineering and Construction industry. We saw major building work take place, urban development continued to remain buoyant, the transport sector picked up towards the end however unfortunately the mining industry continued to go backwards.
Encouragingly 2015 shows great promise throughout the major transport, urban development and building sectors in NSW. Parts of Westconnex are starting to be awarded, parts of the Pacific Highway have been awarded/tendered for, Sydney Light Rail is underway, North Connex, a possible second harbour crossing, a Second Airport, Barangaroo is taking shape, numerous cranes in the city skyline….…..we could go on!
CGC are now over 4 years old and in that time they have continued to raise their profile and cement their networks and contacts in Australia. Whilst in 2014 we continued to focus on immediate and strategic recruitment requirements for our clients, it has been part of our longer term strategy to always keep an eye on the future. As we move into the New Year the future excites us, we are excellently positioned to have an impact on the future landscape of Construction and Engineering in Australia (particularly NSW where CGC HQ is centrally located).
Now we are in 2015, and only 2 weeks into the year, the work projected is already showing immense potential. CGC were back on the 5thJanuary thoroughly prepared and ready to start assisting our clients and candidates to help shape and drive some of the biggest projects NSW will see in a long time. The year has started with a bang and all our specialist consultants at CGC are busy and ready to take your calls.

In this month’s newsletter Steve Morris, Contract Recruiter – Engineering Consultancies, gives us an insight into the industry he recruits in.
Within the consultancy market, 2014 started off relatively slowly and gained momentum throughout the year; culminating in a very busy final quarter where consultancies were still interviewing and hiring new members of staff right up until Christmas. This increasing demand has continued right from the start of 2015, and is bucking the trend of the usual slow first couple of weeks of the year. Clients have been reviewing requirements and placing requests for both contract and permanent hires even whilst on their holidays, thus reflecting the high demand for resources in the current market.
This demand for resources is set to increase throughout the year and what is encouraging is the fact that it is not limited to one particular sector. Obviously, the leading light of the industry within NSW is set to be transport infrastructure and this gets a lot of press. There have been many road and rail projects released already with numerous more projects and packages of work in the pipeline. Two of the major projects in this space are WestConnex, Australia’s biggest urban road project and the North West Rail Link, which is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project. However, in addition to these, both land development and building structures have demonstrated an increase in demand through projects ranging in size from very small right through to multi-million dollar large-scale developments.
We are also seeing an increase in demand for people with specific software experience. For transport infrastructure those with MX, InRoads and OpenRoads experience are in demand. In urban development, those with 12D and Civil 3D experience are finding their skills very sought-after and for building structures, Revit continues to be the in-demand software package of choice.

Life at CGC
After enjoying the festivities of the holiday period the CGC boot camp sessions have been fully booked out in the first week’s of January with everyone eager to shift the Christmas excess and hit the ground running. In exciting news, David and Anna Hope welcomed Oliver Hope to the world on December 22nd. Both Mum and baby are going well although Dad is struggling with some sleepless nights.
After a few months out in the wilderness, CGC welcomed Dan Kundi back to the team in January. Dan is responsible for driving the Civil Construction business at CGC. As mentioned throughout this newsletter, we anticipate this to be a major growth area in CGC HQ over 2015. CGC are strongly networked in the Civil Construction sector so please call Dan for up to date advice on your career. Dan is a budding cricketer, tennis player and swimmer. He doesn’t like football, he supports Leeds Utd.
This month we celebrate the CGC anniversary of two employees. Our Building Services contract specialist David Thompson turned one in CGC years on the 13th January . CGCs Permanent Building specialist David Hope, turned 3 in CGC years on the 2nd January. Both David’s contribute greatly to making CGC an enjoyable place to work. Many happy returns.
