Read moreNic Maplestone returned to his Perth roots earlier this year, bringing with him CGC’s market-leading recruitment practices, and client and candidate partnerships philosophies.
Nic graduated from Mindarie Senior College, Western Australia and has worked in recruitment ever since. In 2014, he relocated to Sydney to work with CGC Recruitment and has spent seven years recruiting design and construction professionals across Australia, specialising in the building and infrastructure sectors. His long-standing relationships include a diverse range of clients, from SMEs through to Tier 1 contractors and consultants.
At the beginning of 2021, Nic returned to Perth - along with his young family - to bring his recruitment expertise back home. From a personal perspective, Nic now resides in Perth’s northern suburbs - and has been playing football with Joondalup United since, enjoying all things sport and fitness. Nic has taken on the responsibility of leading CGC Recruitment's market presence within Western Australia.
Sharing his insights and deep knowledge about the recruitment industry, we asked Nic how the successful CGC Recruitment business model can be implemented in Perth and how he can help his clients achieve their goals.
What attracted you to return back home to Perth?
Nic: On a personal level - being back with family in Perth, the laid back environment, beautiful beaches and weather, and the fact that Perth is such a personable city, were all key selling points for myself, partner and child to return home. Commercially, I felt CGC and I could bring something different to the local building and infrastructure recruitment sectors in Perth… it felt like the right time to bring that home.
National skills shortages within our core market sectors have provided unique challenges across Australia. As border restrictions ease in the new year, WA’s extensive pipeline of projects and affordable real estate, provides an excellent opportunity both personally and professionally for candidates relocating from the Eastern states. With our established operations nationally, CGC have the networks and capability to help WA clients identify, attract, and secure the best local, domestic, and international candidates.
What’s your vision for working with clients in Perth?
Nic: Growing our clients’ businesses will always be a key driver. But, more than that, we want to partner with businesses and bring that sector specific recruitment expertise to the table. The more we align with businesses, the more we can understand their goals and objectives to facilitate their recruitment needs and secure top talent.
What’s your key recruitment or business philosophy when it comes to helping clients?
Nic: At CGC we have the recruitment market knowledge, infrastructure, and operations to identify and engage with top talent within niche markets. Whether it's a delivery or strategic hire, we can offer insights and solutions at both sides of the spectrum.
What types of clients are you working with at the moment?
Nic: We have three main client types we’re predominantly working with right now - head contractors, consultancies, and subcontractors. We would, however, expect to cover many of CGC’s core sectors, especially when we start growing the team and increasing investment over the next year or two.
What’s your main goal for CGC Recruitment in Perth over the next few years?
Nic: As a business, we’d love to mirror the success that we have had in the eastern states. Our aim is to service our core market verticals and to be an industry leader in each of those verticals. We want to be across our core market sectors but with clear WA local market knowledge. At the same time, we must be open to the prospect of new opportunities aligned to the WA landscape and provide a consultative approach whilst partnering with clients. We have some exciting growth plans in place so watch this space…
How does the CGC Recruitment business model suit Perth?
Nic: From a cultural perspective, our team are genuine industry specialists within their key verticals and we’re well positioned - due to the longevity of building strong networks. Thanks to that specialisation, there’s a real care factor for the sectors we work in, so we go the extra mile and provide a personal touch.
We’re not a transactional recruiter - and we add value in a variety of ways, including market reports, industry updates, salary intelligence, etc. We really try to differentiate ourselves by offering a service that is unique because we do genuinely care.
