CGC Projects in Focus - Brisbane Quarter (300 George Street)

In our blog series, CGC Projects in Focus, we have been highlighting major projects across Queensland and New South Wales, providing information and commentary on key developments and the resulting opportunities to the engineering, construction and infrastructure sectors.  Developments like - The Brisbane Quarter, also known as 300 George Street.

Brisbane's skyline is rapidly changing and transforming into one which resembles a central business district that buzzes with activity. As part of that, new and ongoing developments are rapidly making Brisbane the construction job capital of Australia.

Brisbane skyline construction project

Like Melbourne and Sydney, Brisbane is attracting more residents, tourists, and corporate businesses to the city with the constant development of new infrastructure. The Brisbane Quarter brings together these three consumer segments on a single city block. With three independent towers, 300 George Street is the triple threat of skyscraper city developments.

Tower one

'The One' is the residential building of the trio. Zenx Architects designed the concrete construction which will include 467 residential apartments on 82 floors. Multiplex commenced construction in June 2018 and expect to complete the project in 2021. Upon completion in 2021, The One will be Brisbane's second tallest building at 264 metres.

Tower two

Designed by DBI Architects, the 'W Brisbane' is the shortest building in the mixed-use precinct. The 5-star hotel is 34 stories and contains 312 hotel rooms, plus presidential and executive suits. Multiplex commenced construction on Tower two, seven levels of basement parking, and retail and hotel facilities in September 2015. The W Brisbane and retail stores opened in mid-2018.

Development owner, Shayher Group who is part of Taiwan-based developer Par Jar Group, appointed Colliers International to lease the retail spaces in the mixed-use domain.

Tower three

'300 George', also a Zenx Architects design, is due for completion in mid-2019. The 182-metre office building will have 58,209 square metres of commercial space. Shayher is working with CBRE and JLL on commercial real estate sales and lettings.

Timeline and cost

Shayher Group purchased the former law courts buildings in May 2013 and the development application lodged in November 2013 was approved by Brisbane City Council in December 2013. The 7892 square metres of prime riverfront estate will provide the ultimate destination for work, relaxation, and recreation. By the expected completion date in 2021, the ambitious project will have taken over 8 years and $1 billion to develop.

The opportunity

As parts of this project have already been delivered it’s difficult to quantify the number of remaining jobs that may be required.  However, we still see significant opportunities for construction job seekers within this project, which ultimately has around two years until completion.
